Transforming Education with the IB

UWC Atlantic and the International Baccalaureate are partnering to transform education

For the first time in over 50 years, the International Baccalaureate is collaborating with schools on a holistic programme level review to renew and reinvigorate its education programmes for 16–19-year-olds.

As one of the first pilots of this collaborative review, the IB will be working alongside UWC Atlantic to rethink education and design a new educational pathway.

Created in partnership with the IB, UWC Atlantic will offer a bespoke, project-based, curriculum focused on exploring complex systemic real-world challenges.

As multiple global crises unfold and collide, students are calling out for an education that affirms the possibility of a more just, equitable and regenerative world. There’s a growing disconnect between the education they are getting and the education they need.

So, education must change. This pilot will equip students with the hope and initiative to tackle the metacrisis head on, to catalyse change and drive the transformations the world so desperately needs.

Focusing on four areas, Biodiversity, Energy, Food and Migration this bespoke curriculum, called the Systems Transformation Pathway: Leadership for Just Futures, will shine a spotlight on transformative change, systems leadership and making the world a fairer place for the future.

The course will be pioneered by a diverse and global cohort of 20 students from the 2023 intake of UWC Atlantic students. Following evaluation of the pilot, the intention is that all UWC Atlantic students will be able to take part in the pathway by 2027. More schools around the globe will also be invited to experience this transformative pathway as part of the IB’s multi-year collaborative project to review the IB’s programmes for 16-19-year-olds.

Graduates of this new IB Diploma pathway will leave UWC Atlantic uniquely empowered. They'll learn how to organise at scale and address systemic challenges, balancing the 'why' of systems thinking with the 'now what.' This collaboration between the IB and UWC Atlantic is vital in paving the way for the future. - Olli Pekka Heinonen, IN Director General.
