Additional Learning Needs

Here at UWC Atlantic, we appreciate and celebrate all forms of individuality and that applies to learning styles too. We understand that students learn in different ways to one another and we are determined to accommodate individual learning needs and requirements. The Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Provision is based in The Learning Centre (TLC) and coordinates learning support for those with exceptional requirements and works with students to promote a fully inclusive campus.

We support a range of additional learning needs, such as:

  • Dyslexia
  • Dyscalculia
  • Dysgraphia
  • Dyspraxia/DCD
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Asperger’s Syndrome
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder/Attention Deficit Disorder
  • Cognitive Impairment
  • Speech and Language Impairment
  • Hearing/Visually Impairments

Specialist student support is delivered through 1:1 study tutorials or in small groups where possible. In addition to this, the Learning Support Network hosts a range of workshops where both staff and students can develop their understanding of learning diversity and inclusive education.

General learning support is also available, whether it be helping students organise their time more efficiently or guiding them through a difficult homework task, there is always someone available to help.

The provision is managed by the Additional Learning Needs Coordinator who is based in The Learning Centre (TLC), located in the centre of the castle.

Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo)

The role of the ALNCo is to manage the provision for learners with additional learning needs and to support students in accessing the full UWC experience. This includes the provision of Individual Development Plans (IDP). IDPs are working documents created by the student and ALNCo to inform teachers and wider college staff of the student’s individual needs. The ALNCo works closely with the wider TLC support network to secure holistic support for all students.  In addition to this, the ALNCo collaborates with external agencies to coordinate specialist assessments and services for learners with specific learning needs.

Emma Gaze - Additional Learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCo)

Passionate about inclusive learning, Emma coordinates the provision for students with Additional Learning Needs (ALN).

From her teaching experience in the Special Educational Needs and Disability sector, Emma learnt that a purposeful education is far from the ‘one size fits all’ approach. Instead she believes that through personalised learning, education can become the experiential opportunity young people need in order to flourish and succeed.
